the District, and it is proposed that some portion of the
time of the female Sanitary Inspector should be devoted to
visiting homes where there are children and giving
instruction, when necessary, in the feeding, care and nurture
of infants. It is intended to pay a salary of about £100
per annum, and the officer would be required to devote her
whole time to the services of the Board.
I am Sir,
Your Obedient Servant,
S. G. RATCLTFF.
Clerk to the Board.
The Secretary,
Local Government Board.
Local Government Board:,
Whitehall, S.W.
12th September, 1899.
Sir,
I am directed by the Local Government Board to
advert to your letter of the 28th July, with reference to the
proposal of the Limehouse District Board of Works to
appoint a female Sanitary Inspector, with the duty of
visiting homes where there are children and giving instruction,
when necessary, in the feeding, care and nurture of
infants.
In reply, I am to state that the Board have had this
proposal under consideration, and that while they
sympathise with the desire of the District Board of Works
to take steps to reduce the high rate of infant mortality
existing in the District, they must point out that the particular
work which it is proposed to give to the female Sanitary
Inspector, is not among the duties assigned to such an
Inspector by the Sanitary Officers (London) Order, 1891,
and therefore no part of the salary paid for that work,
could be repaid out of the County Fund.
