In spite of the increased willingness of advanced patients to
enter hospital there will always remain a certain number who
wish to spend their last days with their family at home. While
one cannot but sympathise with this attitude, from a Public
Health standpoint it is to be regretted, as an advanced case of
tuberculosis is a virulent source of infection and a menace to
those in close contact with him. Nothing short of compulsory
removal will usually avail, but only exceptional circumstances
could justify such harsh measures.
I submit at the end of the report a statistical summary of the
work of the department for the year.
In conclusion, I would like to thank the Medical Officers of
Health, the Hospital Physicians and Surgeons, the Resident
Medical Officer, and the Hospital Secretary for their valuable
help and advice ; and the Dispensary Staff for their efficient work
and loyal support.
H. TYLFORD HOWELL.
