The Borough Midwife and her deputy paid 940
visits in connection with her practice. She also
conducts a regular weekly session for ante-natal care
of her patients.
OBSTETRICAL CONSULTANTS.
The Council has a panel of three Obstetric
Consultants, who may be called in by any general
practitioner in any midwifery case which presents
difficulty or abnormality. One consultation took
place during the year.
HOME HELPS.
At the end of the year, there were 12 Home Helps
on the panel, with 6 other women acting occasionally
as relief helps. During the year, Home Helps were
arranged for in 172 cases. In 61 cases the mother
paid a contribution for the services rendered.
This service, despite its difficulties and the falling
birth rate, steadily maintains its usefulness. Of the
184 applications made during the year, some 27
were not proceeded with for various reasons such as
non-payment of contribution, removal from district,
admission to hospitals, or relative being found
available for help at confinement.
