This last named is a new home recently opened by
the Association of Maternity and Child Welfare
Centres.
With regard to children, 42 were sent to the
Hertfordshire County Council's Home at St.
Leonard's-on-Sea, Sussex, for periods varying from
2 to 4 weeks. We have also an arrangement with the
Association of Maternity and Child Welfare Centres
for the reservation of 3 cots to be used interchangeably
at the John Madocks Babies Home, Basing,
and the Noel Home, Letchworth. Under this
arrangement 20 children were sent to the Noel Home,
for periods of 2 to 12 weeks, and 15 children to the
John Madocks Home, for periods of 4 to 15 weeks
respectively. In addition, one specially delicate
child was placed in the care of a lady near Pershore for
8 Aveeks after extended treatment at Basing.
HOSPITAL TREATMENT FOR
MALNUTRITION.
We have no formal arrangement for prolonged
observation and in-patient treatment for children
suffering from dietetic mismanagement and malnutrition.
The Council has, however, occasionally paid
for the treatment of Bethnal Green children in the
St. Thomas's Babies Hostel.
PROVISION OF MILK FOR NECESSITOUS
MOTHERS AND CHILDREN.
The prevalence of unemployment and low wages
among the residents in the Borough, to which reference
has been made elsewhere, makes it specially
necessary to care for the nutrition of mothers and
children, expectant and nursing mothers and young
children under 5.
The Council's grants of milk to necessitous
expectant and nursing mothers and young children
under five years are made for a period of 4 weeks
